Flower lovers had all they could ask for at the BC and Yukon Peony Show held in Castlegar over the weekend.
This is third show hosted locally, and organizer Holly Pender-Love was happy with how the event went.
“Our challenge this year was that most of the local flowers were so late, this was the case for the whole region,” explained Pender-Love.
But this year’s show still had the highest number of entries so far thanks to submissions from the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
“Under the circumstances, with such a late season, we were absolutely thrilled to have donations from this side and the other side of the line so we could put on a good show,” said Pender-Love.
Pender-Love credits the show’s volunteers with helping make the event such a success, “The volunteer team in Castlegar is extraordinary.”
A luncheon featuring a talk by this year’s judge Blaine Marchand took place Saturday afternoon. The event featured a visit from the “queen” who presented Mayor Lawrence Chernoff with a medal for his dedicated service to the Commonwealth.
There were 341 entries in this year’s show in a wide range of categories from single blooms to floral displays.
Best of Show went to Derek and Anita Roulston from Castlegar.
Adriana Work from Beasley won Best Single Peony with her Scarlet O’Hara, Best Double Bomb for her Rosea Plena, Best Tree Peony for her High Noon, Betsy Fernleaf for her Fernleaf Hybrid P. Tenufdiz x Vetchii.
Best Multiple Bloom went to Shirl Bayer from Winlaw for High Noon, Best Itoh went to Kat Enns from Castlegar for her Sequestered Sunshine and the Best Garden Beauty also went to Kat Enns.
