The Circle of Indigenous Nations Society will hold its third-annual Aboriginal Day Celebration in Pass Creek on June 21.

The celebration is a free event that will take place at Pass Creek Park from 3 to 7 p.m. It includes a free dinner, drumming, dancers who will teach dance steps and fun activities for kids.

“We’re going to have a teepee set up with Elder time for the children and we’ll have two or three sessions of that, and they’ll each walk away with a gift that’s being sponsored by Celgar,” says Jessica MacLeod, Aboriginal family connections coordinator for COINS.

There will also be a craft the kids can make and a training game.

“They break up into two groups and the one group are the traders and one group are the hunters. And then they go out and find … these cards with animals,” explains MacLeod. “Then the traders set up camp and they build a structure, and they collect beads and things, and then they come together and do trading, which is a traditional interactive game.”

There will also be vendors on site and tables representing different community resources.

COINS is still looking for more vendors and there’s no charge for Aboriginal vendors. Anyone interested can contact Jessica MacLeod at jessica.coinations@gmail.com or 250-608-3679.

Everyone is welcome on Wednesday, June 21; please bring a chair as there is limited seating.
