SHSS Certification Program

SHSS has been given a grant to offer our Grade 12 students an amazing opportunity. Students can complete certificate courses such as OFA – Level 1, OFA – TE, Serving It Right, Avalanche Awareness, Forklift Operator, Tool Safety, and many more courses that will be offered throughout the spring. These classes are free to Grade 12 SHSS students, prepare students and offer valuable skills for future jobs. In addition to getting free job skills training, SHSS Grade 12 students also earn high school credit through certificate course completion.

Art Department – River Project

The SHSS art department, along with many other schools in our community is working alongside professional artists to create art to support the Columbia River and renegotiation of the Columbia River Treaty project. The students have been asked to create art that reflects scenes on the river, the dams, and the history of both in relation to their lives. The resulting work will be displayed and published in a book to share with our community. This project will take place in the spring of 2018.

Congratulations Myles Peterson, 2018 Junior Dragon’s Den

Regional Qualifier

Junior Dragons’ Den is a student business competition and a call to action for entrepreneurs from Grades 7 to College/Trades school level to create their own summer job/business or to expand an existing one.

The competition is open to students from throughout the East and West Kootenay and Peace Liard regions of British Columbia. Students may enter the competition in one of the following categories: Junior – Grades 7-10, Senior – Grade 11-12, or Post-Secondary – College/University/Trades.

After impressing the dragons at the regional competition, Myles will advance to the championship round on Saturday, May 5, at the Charles Bailey Theatre in Trail. Last year over $7,000 was awarded to Junior Dragons.

Come out to the Brilliant Cultural Centre on Thursday, April 19, to cheer Myles on.

March 5-16 March Madness basketball tournament

On March 5 we started our sixth annual March Madness basketball tournament. It was a huge success, and a great way to bring our school together. We had many teams compete in a series of three-on-three basketball games to see who came out on top. Teams were created and named by the students, and then they were placed in either the junior or senior division according to their grades.

The winners for the Junior Division: team “Wet Like Water” (Hardy Hutt, Ethan Lawczynski, Grace Beetlestone, and Jesco Knelsen) They came out victorious after a hard-fought battle with “Hoops I Did It Again, and “The Muckers”

The winners in the senior division: Team UCLA (Mawien Madut, Isaiah Duvall, Lexi Holoboff, and Colton Shkuratoff) beat “Team 1” in a one-minute sudden death overtime.

School-wide college competition

The school was divided into four college teams modelled after the NCAA March Madness. This year’s teams were the Gonzaga Bulldogs, Texas Longhorns, Oregon Ducks, and North Carolina Tar Heels. During the past week, teams competed by participating in dress-up days and carnival games. On Friday, teams had an opportunity to improve their scores through competition during the March Madness assembly. At the end of the cheer competition, three-point-shot contest, and the tug-o-war, the Texas Longhorns came out victorious. Thank you to the Marketing and Leadership classes for hosting this awesome event and to all of the players, scorekeepers, and officials that helped make this event a great success.

Environmental Stewardship and Applied Skills 9 Nancy Green trip

Environmental Stewardship and Applied Skills is an experimental and place-based learning course where the students learn both outside and in the classroom. Learning skills that help them regardless of the weather, students spend time in their environments within the Kootenay area. The goals are to create a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of nature while working as a team on their outings. The students work towards achieving their avalanche awareness certificate, river ecosystem stewardship, and are introduced to forest firefighting. Recently, the class went on an outing to the Nancy Green Summit where they worked in groups to practised tree well survival, snowshoeing through the area, building snow huts, and working with probes and tracking devices for avalanche survival practice.

SHSS new cell phone policy

Starting this semester, SHSS has started a new cell phone free classroom policy, to hopefully help our students not be so distracted in class and get the most out of their learning time. Mrs. McKay’s Family Studies 12 class researched the effects cell phones have on students learning, and they have come up with a solution. This semester every teacher put up a cell phone pocket on the wall in their classroom. Students are expected to put their cell phone in a pocket, until the end of class when they have been dismissed. It has been going on for over a month now and it has definitely made an impact on student’s learning. It is showing that it is easier to stay focused, and really learn all we can in the classroom when the phones are put away. It has also allowed many students who feel they need to have their phone with them all the time, a chance to “let go” and not worry about who is doing what outside of the classroom, on social media, or in texts.

Spring break

The students are now in the middle of taking their two-week yearly spring break from school. Some students are taking this time to go travelling, while others are taking this time to simply sleep in. But when April 4 comes around, the students will be right back into classes working hard to get everything accomplished before school is over for the year.
