Canada 2-1 on opening day of Amsterdam Sevens

AMSTERDAM - Ghislaine Landry scored three tries as Canada's women's rugby team won two games and lost another on the opening day of the Amsterdam Sevens.

The Canadians finished second in Pool C and will face the United States in Cup quarter-final play Saturday. They're looking to reach the Cup semifinals for the eighth consecutive tournament.

Landry added seven conversions on the day, and is the tournament's leading scorer with 29 points.

The Toronto native scored her first try in Canada's 28-0 rout of Brazil. Bianca Farella, Mandy Marchak, and Kelly Russell also scored in the team's opener.

Landry scored two more tries and Kayla Moleschi added another in Canada's 21-5 victory over the Netherlands.

Marchak scored her second try of the day in Canada's 10-5 loss to England.

Canada is third in the IRB Women's Sevens World Series standings with 64 points, 18 points ahead of fourth-place England. New Zealand leads with 76 and Australia is second with 74.

Australia finished the day undefeated and the top seed. New Zealand and England also went unbeaten.

Australia will face Brazil, world champions New Zealand take on Russia, and England meets France in the other quarter-finals.
