RDCK looking at improving Ootischenia landfill access
In an effort to reduce traffic and improve sight lines at the Ootischenia landfill, the RDCK is looking at building an alternate access route.
"We undertook an evaluation last year that isn't finalized yet, but it's looking into alternate access routes into the Ootischenia landfill," said Mike Morrison, resource recovery manager for the RDCK. "So (we're) looking at different alternates to using Columbia Road as the main access to the site."
Morrison emphasized that the project is still in draft form and still needs approval.
"One of the consultant's recommendations was that we improve the entrance to the facility," he said. "So basically putting in a pull-out lane off the main road as it goes into our site."
The pull-out lane will allow early birds to park which wouldn't impede traffic on Columbia. The improvements would also improve sight lines at the facility.
"Our directors asked us to put that in the budget as a project for 2013," he said. "We're estimating at this point a cost of about $100,000 to put in the pull-out lane."
Construction of the project would likely begin in the late summer/early fall if it passes through the budget process.
