Columbia Wireless has turned off internet service for a portion of the Slocan Valley in the vicinity of the Trozzo Creek wildfire.

The Nelson Star called Columbia Wireless and could obtain only the following recorded message:

“As of July 21 at 11:30 a.m. we have an imminent tower outage affecting Passmore and Skycastle clients due to a fire which is encroaching one of our main towers. We have dispatched the tower crew to retrieve main parts off of the tower so that we can restore your service quicker once the fire danger is over. We will be updating this message in a timely fashion as we get more information down the line. Please call back for updates.”

A spokesperson at the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s Emergency Operations Centre told the Nelson Star that in the event of an evacuation alert while the internet is down, RDCK staff would go door to door with the alert.
