RCMP Sgt. John Ferguson says 19 drivers were caught speeding excessively over the weekend

West Kootenay traffic police say there were no fatal or serious crashes over the May long weekend.

“The roads were very busy but with a large presence of enforcement and the rainy weather, the motoring public stayed safe,” RCMP Sgt. John Ferguson said in a news release.

However, it wasn’t all good news: police stopped and charged 19 drivers with going more than 40 km/h over the speed limit and impounded their vehicles for seven days each.

The highest speed was 167 km/h in a 100 zone, which was a truck pulling a large cargo trailer and passing cars.

Three impaired drivers were caught, two of whom are facing other charges as well — one for possessing 10 pounds of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and another for breach of probation.

“We will continue to be on the road and through enforcement and education we are hoping to make this the safest year ever for traveling in the Kootenay Boundary,” Ferguson said.
