The Village of Salmo received two prestigious awards at the 2017 conference of the Union of BC Municipalities in Vancouver last week.
The village won the BC Wood Council award for excellence in the use of lumber in municipal construction for the new 6th Street pedestrian bridge opened this year.
The second award was the Community Excellence Award for Partnerships celebrating Salmo’s new Heritage Hub Arts and Cultural Corner located along the highway at Main Street.
The corner features village art windows (to profile the work of local artists), the village art garden, and Heritage Hub Inc. which salvages old building materials and re-purposes them into high quality furniture, fencing and wood-art.
It also provides custom upholstery and tattoo artistry as well as local art apprenticeships.
The awards were presented at the B.C. government reception where Premier Horgan proudly wore his Salmo dinner jacket.
This is the second year in a row that the Village of Salmo has won a Community Excellence Award. Last year, the village won the Best Practices in Organizational Development and Improvement award.
Mayor Stephen White, Councillor Steve Dimock and CAO Diane Kalen-Sukra were Salmo’s delegation to the conference.
They met with various ministers and provincial staff to discuss issues of importance to residents.
