The Slocan Mill Site is up for sale as vacant land for the first time since 1964, according to a local real estate agent.

“They started construction of the mill site in 1964 and then it operated through 2007,” explains Susan McKenzie, real estate agent with Re/Max Home Advantage. “And then then mill shut down and they’ve torn it apart, and it’s now again vacant land and being offered as such.”

The asking price for the 19.55-acre property is $2.3 million and it is currently zoned as a Mill Industrial Zone (M-1), but a developer could apply for a change in zoning.

“The city has really focused on trying to insure that an investor will come in that has like-minded dreams for the site, as the city does and the community does,” says McKenzie. “So they’re hoping for some mixed use purposes, which would be some residential, potentially condos, some single-family residential and then possibly a marina, a pub, a restaurant, some market space. So they really want mixed use and utilize that whole property to its best potential.”

Slocan Mayor Jessica Lunn was contacted for comment regarding the site, but had not responded by press time.

As it is, the current zoning would still allow the buyer of the site to operate a mill there.
