An interface fire was quickly extinguished Friday afternoon after calls from the public alerted the Castlegar Fire Department to smoke from an unknown source in south Castlegar.

The fire was located to the east of the train tracks in the vicinity of Under a Penny and the Esso Cardlock station, a short distance into the bush near the trail that runs parallel to the tracks. A stone fire pit was located in the centre of the charred area.

Several members of the public reported seeing a transient male frequenting the area of the fire recently. Several bags were discovered at the scene and transferred to the RCMP.

The fire covered an area approximately 20 metres by 20 metres.

Eight firefighters attended the fire along with Engines One and Two.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
