Upgrades are on the way for the washroom facilities at Millennium Park.

The improvements include all-season washrooms, change rooms and outdoor showers. Other features include a dedicated family and disabled accessible room as well as two additional family-focused rooms — a washroom and another change room.

The exterior of the facility will feature three showers.

Improvements to the washroom facilities at the park have been in discussion at the city council table for quite some time. As the popularity of the park and the natural swimming ponds grew, the current facilities became insufficient to meet the needs of the community.

Construction on the facility is expected to begin the week of Sept. 28. As a result, the washroom facilities at the park and the swimming ponds will be closed for the season.

The city has plans to move portable toilets to the park until construction is completed.

The contract for the almost $700,000 project was awarded to Rossland firm DJM Contracting.

Columbia Basin Trust has provided a $322,031 grant to help pay for the project. The city’s portion of the project was approved in the 2020-2024 financial plan and will be funded using municipal borrowing.
