September 18, 1934

– November 19, 2016

Fred Stroes September 18, 1934 – November 19, 2016. After 82 years Scotty finally beamed him up. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family. Fred is remembered with love by Helmi, his wife and best friend for 55 years, their 5 children: Karen (Byron), Audrey (Fred), Peter (Linda), Kristy, Jennifer (Aaron). 9 grandchildren: Kelsey (Rick) Andrew (Taylor) , Holly, Alexander, Ben (Katie), Mackenzie, Anneka and Haley. 3 great grandchildren: Gemma, Cadence and Maxwell. From Holland: Fred’s brother Han and family, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews of both Fred and Helmi. Dad was the epitome of a family man. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren fiercely, and they him.

Fred and Helmi emigrated from Holland in 1961, and their great Canadian adventure began. An adventure it was! Many of these fond memories were shared with members of the extended Dutch Clan, whom Fred held dear to his heart. Fred spent a large part of his working career at Stanley Humphries Senior Secondary School as a science teacher. During this time he was instrumental in starting a youth centre, as well as an alternative high school in Castlegar. Dad was always passionate about world events, politics and learning, and sharing his knowledge with others. Fred and Helmi’s home was often filled with friends who enjoyed Fred’s humour and lively debates.

At Fred’s request, there will be no service. A celebration of life will take place at a later date. Our thanks to Castlegar Home Support, and special thanks to Dr. Ellen Smart for her compassionate and attentive care of Fred. Donations can be made to some of Fred’s favourite charities (Save the Children or Doctors Without Borders). Happy cosmic travels, Opa. We will love and miss you forever.
