Janet was born in a farmhouse in Denholm, Saskatchewan, in 1912. She was the second of six children to George and Mary MacKenzie. Her mother was Metis and her father immigrated to Canada from Scotland in his early twenties. Her school only went to grade six so she moved into town and boarded with a family to continue her schooling to get her credit to become a psychiatric nurse. She achieved her goal and got a job at the North Battleford psychiatric hospital, where she worked for many years. Janet moved to Vancouver, B.C., at the start of World War II, where she worked at St. Paul’s Hospital. There she met George Carr and they were married in 1945 in Robson, B.C., at the United Church. George was employed at Cominco in Trail. B.C., and they had two children, Leah (Polonicoff) and Loree (McArthur). She also raised her nephew, Terry Keefe, from the age of five to his adult life. She has five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. George died at age 54 and Janet survived him to live to the age of 103 years old. She lived on her own until 99 years of age at which time she went into the Castleview Care Centre. Special thanks to the staff at Castleview for their care and support of Janet. She loved her family with all of her heart. God bless you and may you rest in peace.
