December 7, 1924 – March 16, 2017

Laura Pozney passed away peacefully on March 16, 2017 at the age of 92 at Castleview Care Centre, with her family at her side.

Born in Kylemore, Saskatchewan on December 7, 1924 to Doris and Lawrence Malakoff, Laura was the eldest of six children. She had four brothers and one sister (Larry, Pat, Alex, Johnny, and Florence). Her family moved to Krestova, BC when she was 11 years old. While living in Krestova, Laura met and later married Jack Pozney on December 21, 1946. In 1953, they moved to Taghum, where they lived for over 50 years, raising their five children (Tom, Ernie, Jacob, Lynn, and Sharon).

Laura worked hard her entire life. In her teenage years, she worked in several local and Okanagan orchards. While living in Taghum, aside from raising her children, Laura worked on their family hobby farm and harvested as much as she could from her huge vegetable garden. Once her children were grown, she began working in housekeeping at Mount Saint Francis Hospital in Nelson where she worked for over 10 years. Taking pride in a job well done, Laura made a lot of good friends while working at ‘the Mount’.

Laura continued living in Taghum until after her husband Jack passed away in 2002. In 2009, she decided to move into the Nelson Kiwanis Villa and just loved living there. When the sun was shining, you would often find Laura sitting on one of the chairs in front of her apartment enjoying a cup of coffee or tea. Recognized for her beautiful smile, Laura took great pleasure in greeting all passersby, many of whom would sit in the spare chair beside her for a chat.

She enjoyed knitting, cooking, gardening and singing with the Taghum Ladies Doukhobor Choir. She was very proud to have had the opportunity to perform at Expo 86 in Vancouver with her Choir.

Laura was predeceased by her parents, Doris and Lawrence Malakoff, husband Jack, brothers Johnny, Larry, Pat and Alex, and her eldest son Tom.

She is survived by her children Ernie (Shirley) Pozney, Jacob (Elaine) Pozney, Lynn (Mark) Bublitz, Sharon (Doug) Stoddart, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and her sister Florence Perepolkin.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the Crescent Valley Hall. Interment at the Krestova Cemetery to follow.

The family would like to thank Dr. Merritt and the nurses and staff at Castleview Care Centre for their kindness and compassion while Laura was in their care.

Jordan Wren from Castlegar Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

She will be dearly missed and never forgotten.

May she rest in peace.
