Letter: Smokers displaying dangerous behaviour

There were cigarette butts everywhere on the edge of the roadway.

I live on Broadwater Road in Robson. Sometimes I go for a pleasant walk and enjoy the view of the Columbia River.

Recently, with wildfires all over our beautiful province, I decided to cast my eyes down to the margin of the road and look for signs of carelessness. The revelation was horrifying. There were cigarette butts everywhere on the edge of the roadway. I picked up 58 today, in about 200 feet of walkway. That’s 58 potential wildfires that careless people have risked — in only 400 feet of roadside (both sides).

The soil and vegetation are tinder-dry right now. This behaviour, if continued, could potentially wipe out all of Robson and more.

We need smokers to be aware of the risks and we need some signage in place to remind people of these dangers.

Please, everyone, do consider the possible results of this behaviour.

With hope and prayers,

Dar McDowell
