Castlegar Broomball headed to Las Vegas Sept. 6 to 9 for the Annual Sin City Show Down.

In a division of five teams, Castlegar was the only Canadian team taking part in the co-ed side. The first game was against an evenly matched team from Pittsburgh. It was a hard-fought battle with no score until the second period. Castlegar, unfortunately, fell 2-1 with the lone goal from Marvin Jones assist to Adam Rodgers.

The next game was against one of the top Minnesota co-ed teams — Revel Repair from Long Lake Minnesota. Castlegar did not fair to well as they were mercied in the first period 6-0. Friday morning’s game saw Castlegar come up against Pittsburgh to play for fourth and fifth place.

Again, it was a very evenly matched game. There were plenty of scoring chances in the first for Castlegar. Both Lisa Macgregor and Tessa Vennard had great opportunities in front of the net. Castlegar opened the scoring in the second with a goal by Rodgers from Jones. Castlegar made it 2-0 on a pretty breakaway goal by Joel Audet (assist to Macgregor). Pittsburgh scored making it 2-1 until the last few minutes of play when they pulled their goalie. Jodi St. Thomas put it away with the empty net goal (Rodgers with the assist).

Castlegar went on to play the first place team, the Sparkplugs from Richfield Minnesota – the eventual winners of the tourney. It was a tough battle and Melanie Streloff did her best in net to keep the game close but seconds into the second period, the Sparkplugs put it away for good making it 6-0 to mercy Castlegar.

Castlegar Broomball resumes playing after Thanksgiving on Thursdays at 9:15 and Sundays at 4:15 at the Castlegar Complex. Newcomers are always welcome and we have plenty of lender equipment available for use.
