An unexpected repair caused the Castlegar Curling Club to postpone curling start-up by a few weeks.

The problem was a leak in the chiller that resulted in the loss of all of the refrigerant.

By Oct. 16, all repairs had been done and ice technician Bob Maloff was busy making ice. He expects curling to start the week of Oct. 30 or Nov. 6.

The repair required a lot of people to work together including boiler inspectors, machinists, welders and refrigeration specialists.

“It worked out really good,” said Maloff. “All the companies were really good, they worked really hard to get us back together again.”

The work took about a week and a half. All of the bills haven’t come in yet, so a total cost of the repairs is not yet known, but could potentially be up to $10,000.

The curling club has a contingency fund to pay for the repairs.

“Because of a very conscientious executive board we are able to cover the expenses,” explained Maloff.

If you would like to sign up for curling, leave a message at the rink at 250-365-6666 with your name, number and the league you would like to join and a representative from the right league will give you a call.
