A Castlegar man placed first in his age group in two events at the 2017 Global Relay Canadian Masters Road Championships.

The championships took place in Vancouver from June 8 to 11 and Brian Marsh, a Castlegar resident and member of the Grand Forks Cycling Club, finished first in two events, and fourth in the criterium.

Marsh, who was competing in the 60+ category, finished first in his age category for the time trial, completing the 21-kilometer course in 31:31.

“The time trial, you start by yourself, you can’t draft anybody — drafting means if I ride closely behind you, you break the wind for me so I use less energy,” explained Marsh. “So a time trial you have to ride all by yourself and all you’re doing is racing the clock, so the fastest person over the track wins.”

But for the criterium and the road race, the first person across the line wins, and Marsh was the first across in the road race. He finished eight laps of 10.47 km in 2:24:03.

He finished fourth in the criterium, with a time of 48:28, right behind John Langley from Vernon, who placed third.

Marsh has been racing for just over 10 years and competed in the 2010 Canadian Road Cycling Championships road race, where a mechanical problem kept him from the podium.

“I had a shot at the podium, but the mechanical took me out of that,” he said. “I broke a spoke.”

Two weeks before this year’s national championships, on May 27 and 28, Marsh also placed first in both the BC Provincial time trial and road race.
