West Kootenay seniors have an opportunity to improve their swimming skills through the Castlegar seniors swim program at the Castlegar and District Community Complex pool.

Castlegar Aquanauts head coach Corbin Anderson will be leading adult improvement sessions weekly throughout the summer. Corbin brings with him 12 years of competitive swim experience and is eager to pass on his knowledge and experience.

The sessions are open to all seniors (55+) at no charge other than the basic pool admission fee. Workouts will assess each individual swimmer’s abilities and then provide the necessary technical assistance to develop the swim strokes from the basics.

“Even if a swimmer is not able to swim a length of the pool — not only will they be able to by the end of the summer, but also they will be able to make it look easy,” says club spokesperson Steve Miller.

Miller also says one of the objectives of the new program is to return the active adult swim program to pre-pandemic levels and to encourage residents from other communities to participate.

Participants also have the option of can utilizing the progress tracker feature of the club’s website.

The workouts will also be posted on the website for the perusal of those not able to attend including club members from Rossland, Trail, Nelson and Grandforks.

The sessions will held every Monday from 10 - 11 a.m. until the end of August.

Beginning in October and throughout the fall and winter, Lesley Beaston will be leading monthly mini-swim clinics at the Castlegar pool. Lesley has 24 years of coaching experience and high-level participation in several sporting disciplines.

The objective of these sessions is to maintain a basic fitness and interest level for swimmers throughout the winter months. These clinics will be held the first Monday of each month. Again, there will be no charge except for pool admission.
