Local junior golf is gearing up for the 2017 season.

The Zone 1 West Kootenay Junior Golf Circuit is now accepting registration for this year’s events, which begin the weekend of May 6 and 7, with events in Castlegar and Christina Lake. The circuit is open to kids under 19 years old and is open to golfers of every skill level.

“They should come if they want to try it, … to kind of get their feet wet in playing tournament golf, competitive golf,” says Colin Overennay, organizer for the circuit. “As well it’s just a fun social time for those that just want to go play for fun and they get to play the different golf courses and for a pretty reasonable price.”

The registration fees for each event have not yet been determined, but they will all be between $20 and $30.

There are prizes available for those who participate, but Overennay doesn’t want young golfers put off by the competitive aspect.

“We just want to stress that it’s pretty low key,” he said. “I think what’s kept a lot of the kids away is that they think it’s too competitive, so we’re just trying to stress that it is just a fun event and it’s not overly competitive.”

There’s also no pressure to compete in every event. Golfers can compete in all, some or even just one of the events.

The schedule is as follows:

May 6 Castlegar at 12 p.m.

(pro shop 250-365-5006)

May 7 Christina Lake at 12 p.m. (250-447-9313)

May 13 Redstone at 12 p.m. (250-362-9141)

May 28 Creston at 12 p.m. (250-428-5515)

June 17 Balfour at 12 p.m. (250-229-5655)

June 25 Birchbank at 12 p.m. (250-693-2255)
