The 2003 West Kootenay Wolf Pack spring hockey team finished their season with a win at the Alberta Canada Cup over the AAA team from Spruce Grove, Alta. Tijs Vreys of Slocan Park and Austin McKenzie of Fruitvale each had two goals and two assists in the 6-3 victory.

The game was tied after both the first and second periods but the West Kootenay team put the game away after the second period ice-cleaning with two quick goals near the seven-minute mark including a power play goal from Fruitvale’s Tristan Meakes. Ethan Lawczynski of Castlegar shut the door on the Alberta team in the third period. Castlegar’s Nick Francis finished the scoring with an empty net goal while killing a six-on-three in the final 70 seconds.

Assistant coach Rick Rougeau of Grand Forks opined that “this is the best group of young men that I have had the opportunity to be around. They came together and played for each other. Our hope is to keep this core group together for a couple more seasons so they are prepared to make an immediate impact on the Major Midget teams.”

The Wolf Pack finished the tournament with a 2-2-1 record. The Wolf Pack was the only team not to lose to eventual finalist Saskatchewan West Wheat Kings.

For the second consecutive tournament Fruitvale’s Austin McKenzie lead the tournament in goals.

The Wolf Pack is comprised exclusively of West Kootenay and East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association players born in 2003 who will be first year bantams in the fall.
