Plain Language: Steps to Success

The whys and the hows of sending out a clear message

An October 30 event is coming up at Selkirk College in Castlegar that will prove valuable for anyone who wants to be a better communicator. After all, it's easier for anyone to accept, or agree with something they can understand.

Kate Harrison Whiteside uses her journalism, business and training experience and skills to help people communicate clearly and creatively. With a keen interest in new media, spanning 15 years, she has become a web/social/e-media service provider; published plain language writer/editor; web and new media trainer; event organizer; videographer; blogger; and fiction writer. She recently moved from England back to Canada and has settled in Rossland.

Those taking part will:

• Explore the plain language process and audience assessment techniques

• Learn how to apply the plain language process to different types of communications

• Edit material in small working groups

• Learn about resources – assessment checklists and online tools.
