Brilliant Cultural Centre hosts Day of Peace Friday

The USCC will be honouring the United Nation's International Day of Peace on Sept. 21 with a ceremony outside the Brilliant Cultural Centre

The USCC will be honouring the United Nation's International Day of Peace on Sept. 21 with a ceremony outside the Brilliant Cultural Centre on Friday from 6 p.m. until 6:45 p.m.

"We do this every year and have been for several decades," said J.J. Verigin, executive director of the USCC and president of the Kootenay region branch of the United Nations Association of Canada. "We've been getting together in the Kootenay Boundary in Grand Forks and Castlegar on the International Day of Peace. It's sponsored by the Kootenay region - United Nations Association and the USCC working groups. We're going to have a gathering with several speakers."

Local dignitaries as well as Aboriginal leaders have been invited to speak on the meaning of the day of peace.

The event will be finished in time for people to go inside the centre and listen to MIR Centre for Peace speaker Justice Murray Sinclair.

"Every year they (Selkirk College) bring in a guest lecturer," said Verigin. "We're just happy to get together and remind people of the importance of this elusive goal that we all seem to want but seem unable to get."
