Fresh vegetables are always a big hit at farmers markets across Canada.

The downtown Castlegar Craft and Farmers Market is set to return this Saturday, June 9. The market takes place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Castlegar Railroad Station Museum and will feature various vendor booths selling arts, crafts, and food.

"We're having a variety of different people come down and set up," said Deb McIntosh, manager at the Castlegar and District Heritage Society and coordinator of the market. "We've got everything from handmade jewellery to veggie plants to homemade cinnamon buns. Someone's bringing eggs. We've got scarves and that type of thing. We've got metal work items. We've also got homemade doggy treats. We've got an energy drink and some children's clothing. So yeah, there's lots of interesting things coming to the first event here. We can only build and grow from there."

Vendors are still welcome and can sign up by calling McIntosh at the museum at 250-365-6440. Space is only $5. Vendors needs to bring their own tent and table. Pretty much anything is welcome, except for garage sale type items.

"We take the money made from the tables and we invest it back into advertising and such," she said. "We also welcome non-profit groups. They can come down and set up and table and let people know what they're about. If you play an instrument and want to come down and do some busking, as long as the music is conducive to the crowd that's here, come on down and do that. Maybe make a couple of bucks."

The kettle corn stand will be on hand as well, says McIntosh. "That always brings in the crowds. You can't go wrong with kettle corn," she said. "There's always a good variety of people. It was really fun last year. It was a great atmosphere. People were really laid back and just really happy to be there. The market is only as good as the people that come down and participate. So we're encouraging everyone to check it out."

The market will run every Saturday until September depending on the weather. You can also check out the Castlegar Craft and Farmers Market page on Facebook.
