The Community Harvest Food Bank is collecting new school supplies, back packs and gift cards for kids heading back to class in a few weeks.

“Remember the feeling of getting new supplies — the excitement of new binders and books, the excitement when opening your crayons and having all the beautiful colours?” said food bank director Deb McIntosh. “I remember putting my name on my new items and looking at them and over again. Let’s make that happen for others.”

McIntosh says that anything people can do to just lift the burden of those that are struggling financially is a great help.

“It is for the kids — they are the important ones and they have no say in the matter.”

“What we can do is make sure they start their school year with the things they need — ready to learn,” added McIntosh. “As a community we can do great things.”

Don’t just think in terms of miniature scissors and crayons, high schoolers need supplies too — things like duo tangs, calculators, binders and paper.

School supplies can be dropped off at the Castlegar News office #A 1810 8th Ave. (next to the Fireside Inn) Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. or at the food bank on Mondays and Fridays between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and on Wednesday’s between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. You can also contact McIntosh at 250-608-1047 to make alternate arrangements.
