The Castlegar Garden Club is inviting the community to join them for a speaker series featuring sessions filled with useful gardening tips tailored to the local environment.
Each session will take place at 6 p.m. at the Castlegar Community Complex. They are free for club members and $5 for non-members.
Jan. 15 – Growing Dahlias - A reference Guide with Aimee Boehmke and Gwen Graovac. These energetic gardeners have a wealth of information to share on the popular subject of Dahlias. Boehmke, a floral designer and cut flower farmer has been devoted to growing dahlias for some time. Graovac, owner of Woven Wild Basketry, teaches the traditional art of basketry, while collecting and growing dahlias.
Feb. 19 – Bountiful Veggie Gardens with Melissa Austen of Haus of Horticulture. Learn how to properly begin your veggie starts and manage the development of your garden space to maximize yields. Austen is a Red Seal Horticulturalist with many years experience in landscaping and the green housing industry. She received her training at Olds College in Olds Alberta.
March 19 – 12 Months in a Kootenay Garden with Jana Melinek. A retired professor of biology who was born in Czechoslovakia, Melinek has had a lifelong hobby of photography well suited to her love of the outdoors. With the help of today's technology, each new image leads to a new study. And yes, she is a tree hugger, a gardener and a wildlife enthusiast.
The club is also encouraging more people to join.
President Darlene Kalawsky says, "Everyone is welcome to join the club to learn about gardening, to network with like-minded people and be involved in the club's local gardening initiatives."
The club hosts monthly meetings at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month at the Castlegar Community Complex. They also offer special events and informative newsletters. The club is a member of the BC Garden Council. Memberships are only $20 per year.
