Castlegar mayors honoured for service to the community

Past mayors presented with gavels at ceremony

The City of Castlegar recognized past mayors at a celebration during the Oct. 18 city council meeting.

Audrey Moore (1977-1993), Lawrence Chernoff (2005-2018), Bruno Tassone (2018-2021) and Kirk Duff (2021-2022) were all on hand to accept commemorative gavels. Mike O’Connor (1993-2005) did not attend, but his daughter accepted the gavel on his behalf.

“We wanted to find a way to recognize the tremendous energy given to the position of mayor,” explained Castlegar CAO Chris Barlow.

“After working with several mayors, I know just how much they give of themselves in the position and there is a lot of personal sacrifice that goes with that … and it’s all for the community.”

Each mayor had an opportunity to share some memories and words of wisdom.

Castlegar’s longest-serving mayor, Audrey Moore, led the charge and her love of Castlegar showed in her words.

“I had a wonderful time doing this job,” said Moore.

“I think we are all lucky to live in this city where if you ask for one volunteer, you get six to respond. We are all thankful for volunteers. I think this city … is a city with heart and always has been and always will be. As long as we look after each other, we can accomplish anything.”

She also had some advice for the mayor and council.

“You can’t do anything alone. You need lots of help, and sometimes you need some patience, but this city is worth it. I think it is in for big things.

“So teach it, use it, and be kind to all of us — you newly elected people. We will be watching.”
