The Castlegar News captured a bronze award at the 100th annual BC and Yukon Community Newspaper Awards’ Ma Murrays last week in Richmond.

Editor Betsy Kline won the award in Outdoor Recreation Writing for the story Robson man survives avalanche in Norns Range. The story covers the experience of local snowmobiler Blaine Penner after he accidentally stepped out onto a cornice, triggering an avalanche.

“It’s not every day you fall off a mountain and live to tell the tale,” said Blaine Penner of the experience that left him looking death in the face on a West Kootenay mountain.

Black Press Media news teams received 88 nominations in 42 out of the 45 award categories.

A number of members of the Black Press Media team were honoured for their distinguished service to the Canadian news media industry, including owner and founder David Black, who received a Gold Quill Award for more than 50 years of service.
