Castlegar Safeway stopped providing plastic bags at the checkout this week, becoming the first grocery retailer in town to halt the practice.
As of May 5, Safeway stores across the country did away with single-use plastic bags. Customers will now have to bring their own bags.
But don’t panic — if you forget your bags, the store has other options. Paper bags can be purchased for $0.15. The store also sells a wide range of reusable bags ranging from $0.25 cloth bags to more expensive insulated carriers.
When available, you can also grab a free packing box from a bin at the front of the store.
