Twin Rivers Elementary School is holding an information session as parents rally to try to save Castlegar's Russian Language and Culture Program (RLC).

The RLC program at Castlegar Primary/Twin Rivers Elementary School has been in jeopardy for several years as enrolment numbers decline.

The program that at one time had parents camping out overnight just to make sure their kindergartner would get a space didn’t even run last year due to low enrolment.

The program is open to all students in the district and bussing is available. It follows the B.C. curriculum in English, plus integrates daily Russian language exposure through routines, themes, and activities.

Kootenay-Columbia School District 20 (SD20) says it is an opportunity for students to become familiar with reading and writing in Russian as well as speaking using common words and expressions.

In December, SD20 held an information session and conducted a survey to gauge future interest in the program among parents with children that will enter kindergarten over the next five years.

The information session will take place at Castlegar Primary on Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. If you can not attend and have questions, email kdesmarais@sd20.bc.ca.
