The City of Castlegar is asking people to stay off the outdoor ice rinks at Kinnaird Park until they are officially opened for the season.

The rinks are not ready or safe to open quite yet, the gates are locked and closed signs are posted. However, several people jumped the fence on Wednesday night to skate on the rinks.

The city says they are concerned for several reasons, including that the rink liners may be permanently damaged.

“The rinks are not safe to skate on yet and we do not want anyone to get hurt,” said the City of Castlegar in a social media post.

“Skates can cut through the exposed rink liners. These are expensive to replace and, if they’re cut badly enough, we could lose the season.”

The city says it will open the rinks as soon as the weather cooperates.
