Construction is beginning on the new playground at Castlegar’s Millennium Park.
Starting this week, Marwest Industries will begin preparing for the construction of the new castle play structure. At 12 metres from the ground to the top of its flag pole, it is set to be the tallest castle play structure in the country.

The new playground will be constructed in the same location as the existing one, next to the parking lot.
Marwest has been contracted to install fencing around the existing playground, clear the area of trees and take down the current playground structure.
Once complete, the site will be handed over to a specialized playground contractor, Kelowna’s Parkworks Solutions Corp., to build the play structure and install the pour-in-place rubberized safety surface.
The playground also includes an accessible swing, an accessible merry-go-round and a pour-in-place sensory design pad.
Once the surface is complete, Marwest will return to install new landscaping including turf, trees, plants and fencing.
An interpretive nature walk is also included in the project.
The project was originally budgeted for $1.8 million, but the addition of the accessible-play features bumped the price tag up to about $2 million. The city has received $1.2 million from the Communities, Culture and Recreation stream of the Canada Infrastructure Program for the project.
The city says given the construction timelines and the requirement for the pour-in-place surface to be installed in warm and dry conditions, opening of the new castle play structure to the public may not occur until spring 2024.
