Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park is now open to the public. Sabrina Yule has been hired on as a summer student and will be at the park to answer questions and help guests from Wednesdays to Sundays through to September.

"We opened last Wednesday," she said. "We're open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There's lots of nice trails here to take walks, dogs are allowed on leashes. You can learn all about the heritage, all about Alexander Zuckerberg, who lived here. You can see the cemetery, the chapel house, and see his carvings. There's tons to see."

Zuckerberg arrived in Castlegar in 1932 to become a teacher for the Doukhobor children in Brilliant.  He stayed for 30 years until his death. He was known as a much-beloved teacher.

In 1981, the City of Castlegar purchased the island and preserved it's history in a park for all to enjoy.

Yule said the island is getting busier and expects it to get even busier yet with the warmer weather coming.

The heritage park is looking for volunteers for Mondays and Tuesdays so it can stay open for seven days a week. Anyone interested can call Deb McIntosh at 250-365-6440.
