Fall is shaping up to be a busy time at the Castlegar and District Public Library.

The library is offering several new programs for children this year and s series of events for adults.

Tinker Time is for children aged three to five. Kids will explore science, technology engineering, arts and math while increasing literacy skills. This program is filling up, so register soon. Children must be potty trained to participate. Start-up date is Sept. 21.

The parent and child book club is an opportunity for kids aged eight through ten to increase literacy skills while bonding with their parents. Each month, parents will read a book with their child and then come to the library to discuss the book with other kids and parents and then participate in a quick craft or game. The program will start in November.

Double Digits is a program for teens and tweens aged ten and up that will be directed by the kids themselves. The group will decide what programs they would like to do. Last year the group made slime, designed t-shirts and made snow globes. The program starts Oct. 4 and runs from 2:45 to 4 p.m.

To register for all programs, call the library at 250-365-6611.

For the adults, the library is hosting several author readings and planning workshops.

Two-Woman Crime Spree will feature Kootenay crime writers J.G. Toews and R.M. Greenway. If you love suspense, thrillers and crime fiction, this is the reading for you. The event will take place Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

Vanessa Farnsworth, author of The Things She’ll be Leaving Behind, will be reading Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. The book is a collection of short stories about women who find themselves trying to survive circumstances they never thought they would encounter.

The library is also presenting a series of free Nidus Personal Planning workshops on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m.

Joint Ownership: the Good, the Bad, and the Risky will take place Oct. 11.

“Joint ownership of bank accounts, real estate property, and vehicles is common for spouses. What can happen when a parent and child own property jointly? Learn about recent court cases that raise new cautions about joint ownership. Joint ownership is not a substitute for planning in case of incapacity or end-of-life.”

Dying Without a Will and Tips on Making a Will will be presented Oct. 18.

“Some people are considered not capable of making a will due to the legal requirements. This may be someone with a disability from birth or someone who delayed making a will and now has advanced dementia. How is their estate settled? For the majority who can make a will, get some tips and resources.”

Consent to Health Care and Facility Care will be presented Oct. 25.

“Consent underlies many of our day-to-day interactions. Consent is also fundamental to encounters with the health care and residential care systems. What are the consent rights of patients? What are the rights of representatives if authorized to give consent for health and personal care by a Representation Agreement?”

The Planning Continuum: a Will is Not Enough will take place Nov. 1.

“Learn about the essential legal documents in BC for those who want to plan for incapacity, for end-of-life, and for after death. We will discuss representation agreements, enduring powers of attorney, and wills.
