Student Leadership

conference in Kelowna

On April 24th the SHSS leadership students travelled to Kelowna to attend the Choose To Lead leadership conference. The conference featured motivational speakers who touched on the subjects of self-confidence, embracing our imperfections, and being who you are. The students came back to our school with a better understanding of themselves and community, and generated ideas of ways to they can help others. The class had a great time at the conference, learned valuable skills, and many of them are excited to attend again next year.

Band Trip

May 9th-13th the Band students of SHSS travelled to Calgary. While there, they worked with professional musicians and guest conductors at Mount Royal University’s Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts. They also visited the National Music Centre, The Calgary Zoo, and saw the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra in concert. Monetary donations made to SHSS helped in making this opportunity one that all students were able to partake in. Thank you to everyone that supported this trip.

Starve-a-thon

On Friday May 11th the SHSS leadership students took part in a 24-hour Starve-a-thon to raise money for education in Kenya. The students collected donations and pledged not to eat for 24 hours to raise awareness for people who are not able to get enough food. The event was a huge success and in total, the students were able to raise over $1000!

Grad Plant Sale Fundraiser

The 2018 grads completed their last fundraiser of the year. The fundraiser was a plant sale that used Nelson’s Georama nursery as the supplier. The beautiful flowers and garden plants, arrived in time for Mother’s Day weekend and peak planting season. The grads were able to sell roughly $6,000 worth of plants and were able to put $2,500 towards their upcoming grad weekend in June.

Thank you to everyone who supported the grads during this fundraiser and throughout this year!

Outdoor Ed Activities

In the first week of May, the Outdoor Ed (Stewardship class) participated in the Know Your Water Shed program. Shannon Bentley, a sponsored instructor for Columbia Basin Trust, was alongside the students in this 3-day program, teaching them about our water shed. The students visited 3 locations in the Columbia Water Shed; the sewage treatment plant, the water treatment plant, and Pass Creek where they did water sampling, and a water health assessment.

The class also participated in the Columbia River sturgeon release. The students were trained by Fresh Water instructors, then they we able to help students from the elementary schools release sturgeon. There were roughly 600 sturgeons released.

Congratulations Myles!

In the Junior Dragons Den finals, Myles Peterson made our school proud and impressed the judges by placing second and earning a total of $1500 throughout the competition. Congrats Myles!!

Fencing in P.E.

Ali Ulker from the B.C. Fencing Association contacted the SHSS P.E. department and offered to come and teach our senior P.E. class how to fence. The students learned many fencing skills and really enjoyed this high-energy activity. This is the first time this sport has been available in Castlegar, and we are very excited that our school had the opportunity to learn to fence.

Welcome Mr. Jones and congratulations Mme. St. Jacques

Our school would like to welcome to Mr. Jones, who has joined the SHSS staff as our new Vice Principal. Mr. Jones worked at J.L. Crowe for 22 years. He taught math and leadership, and spent the last two and a half years as Vice Principal. Although he has only been at SHSS for about 3 weeks, he has experienced a school filled with kind and caring people excited for him to be part of the SHSS team. Mr. Jones already has many goals and ideas he wants to share with our school to make it the best place it can be. He would like to focus on three things that he feels are very important in a school; respecting each other, working together, and becoming involved in our community.

We would also like to congratulate Mme. St. Jacques our former Vice Principal who is now our new Principal. Congratulations to you both on your new positions at SHSS, we are all very happy to have you lead our school!
