What better way to enjoy a ski than under moonlight? This year the annual Full Moon Ski on the Slocan Valley Rail Trail will be taking place on Sunday, February 24th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. You’ll find the crew from the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) 2.5 km south of the Slocan Trailhead at Gravel Pit Road by what’s commonly known as Ken’s Bench. This location is at the northern end of the viewing area for the Arctic and Trumpeter swans which winter over on the Slocan River. Up to 80 swans have been counted at the Walter Clough Wildlife Sanctuary this year.
There’ll be a bonfire waiting to stay warm around as well as refreshments to help keep everyone warm inside. You can catch up on the latest Rail Trail news, become a member of the group as well as enjoy a great ski. If you want a slightly longer ski, park at the Lemon Creek Trailhead and ski north for 3.5 km. The skiing has been great in the Slocan Valley this winter. The snow is always deeper at the north end of the valley and the dedicated volunteer groomers have been setting a good ski track and keeping a lane open for skate skiers.
