It’s been a decade in the making, but the Castlegar Chamber of Commerce (COC) is finally seeing all of its work come to fruition as construction on the new Confluence building begins.
“Today we celebrate the remarkable journey of the confluence of tourism and economic development building that will be one of the first combination passive house certified mass timber public spaces in Canada,” said COC executive director Tammy Verigin-Burk.
About 50 people gathered at the building site at 1995 6th Avenue to put shovels in the ground and celebrate the project.
Creston construction firm Rendek and Associates has been awarded the contract for the $6.7 million, 7000-sq.ft. building.
The new building sits on the site of the previous Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre building. The old facility had to be demolished after the 36-year-old building developed severe foundation issues and engineering studies showed it couldn’t sensibly be repaired.
The new building will host the Chamber of Commerce, the Visitor Centre, Economic Development office, a satellite branch of Community Futures, Destination Castlegar, a board room and community-use spaces.
The project has received millions in funding including almost $3 million from the province, $1.4 million from the federal government and $200,000 from Destination BC.
The CDCOC is non-profit organization that operates independently from the City of Castlegar.
