Students from the Kootenay Columbia Learning Center in Castlegar spent Friday morning helping to move furniture for the Habitat for Humanity organization.
KCLC’s volunteer services were called upon after the Sandman Inn donated a large amount of furnishings which needed to be packed and moved from the uppermost floor of the hotel to the Restore retail space where the items are available for purchase.
It was the third day of volunteering for the students in this capacity, as they put in over 35 person-hours of labour to make the move happen.
KCLC offers an alternative education platform that has more of a social-emotional focus, and self-paced learning schedule than what is offered in a traditional high school setting.
One of the major goals of the school is to connect students to their community through frequent field trips and weekly volunteer efforts.
Since September, KCLC youth have picked unwanted fruit from neighbourhood trees, helped plant daffodils and Camas lilies, enjoyed on-going social visits with senior citizens at Castlewood, and built a greenhouse for the school.
We have recently begun to lend a hand at the Under a Penny Thrift Shop and are always looking for new ways to help in the local area.
