It was often wet and wild at Pass Creek on the weekend, but a good time was had by all and a lot of money was raised for the Muscular Distrophy Association.
The Robson Volunteer Firefighters Association, prompted by a vision from member Justin LePage - himself inspired by a childhood friendship - “re-imagined and re-established,” the Firefighter Games after more than a decade of its absence.
In all, 14 teams from 12 Regional District of Central Kootenay firehouses competed.
“We refreshed the event, made it more about fun than competition, and invited the public, free of charge, to come and be entertained,” LePage said.
An estimated 1,200 people attended the “pure fun, family friendly,” event, which featured nine testing and exciting team competitions which incorporated, mostly, the skills firefighters practice and use in their life and property-saving efforts.
MD is all firefighters’ principal charity, and local halls have been proficient at fundraising for the cause for 60 years. Nelson FD, which finished first overall in the games, also received a 60th anniversary award from the MDA for its “tireless advocacy,” in the cause of raising money for research and enhancing the lives of those afflicted with the range of diseases involved.
Robson, in part because of their building and hosting of the games, was named the, “Up and Coming” firehall this year.
The final tally of funds raised was not immediately available, but organizers are confident the total will be well above $20,000.
More than 100 volunteers assisted with the event, about which the only disappointment was the failure of some area halls to participate.
“We invited everybody (including all West Kootenay firefighter corps) and I don’t know why some didn’t come. We want to be bigger and better next year, so maybe it will happen then.”
While LePage was the driving force at the start, he acknowledges that he had lots of help, and the sponsor support was been unbelievable.
