The local Increasing Recreation Involving Seniors (IRIS) project has been off to a great start with eight events held since it’s kickoff in July.

The long-term the goal of the program is to provide more activities for seniors and prevent them from becoming isolated.

The program was created by local senior’s advocate Sandi McCreight, a coordinator for the Community Response Network based on feedback and needs she saw within the community.

Each event aims to include socialization, education and some good food.

McCreight is very appreciative for all of the volunteer help and community sponsors the project has received. The Black Rooster is the most recent sponsor, donating $995. The funding will be used to offer additional events as requested by program participants. Other sponsors include RDCK Areas H, I and J, CBT, Teck, No Frills, BC CRN and the Castlegar Villa Society.

Upcoming events include a coffee and game gathering on Nov. 10 from 9 to 11 a.m. and a luncheon on Nov. 24. All events are free, but registration is required for lunches. Another luncheon will be held in December.

For more information about IRIS or to register for an event, contact Sandi McCreight or Brittany Scott at 250-444-4747 or email castlegarcrn@hotmail.com.
