Castlegar — Katrine Conroy, MLA for Kootenay West presented Queen’s Jubilee medals to four deserving constituents during November. As a Member of the B.C. Legislature, Katrine was allowed to nominate four people for the Queen’s Jubilee Medal which is being given out for outstanding community service. She had a committee that made sure that all areas of her constituency were represented and four names were forwarded to the Governor Generals office for the medal.
The four award winners were presented with the medal by MLA Conroy in their own home towns and in locations that were special to them. “I wanted to make sure that the award winners were presented with their medals among family and friends”, said Conroy. “We also wanted a celebration to happen in the places that were meaningful to them”.
On November 1st, a medal was presented to Glady Manahan from Castlegar at the Castlegar & District Public Library. Glady has volunteered with the Castlegar Public Library for 59 years and still works 3 shifts a week at the Library helping her community. The other three recipients are pictured below, in order.
On November 20, a medal was presented to Ray Furlotte from Trail at the Trail Middle School. Ray has spent many years volunteering at the Rossland Gold Fever Follies, Trail Arts Council, various arts and sports groups and the Trail Smoke Eaters as well as being a long time teacher and educator. Ray’s dedication to the youth of this area deserved recognition.
On November 20, Rosemarie Parent from Nakusp was presented with a Queen’s Jubilee medal at the Nakusp Public Library. Rosemarie along with her husband Milton, spent many years collecting, preserving and writing about the history of the Nakusp area. As founders of the Arrow Lakes Historical Society they have made invaluable contributions to our historical knowledge. An addition to the Nakusp Library for the new archives is a testament to Rosemarie and Milton’s many years of volunteering.
On November 23, Joanne Ellis from the Village of Slocan was presented an award at the WE Graham Community School. Joanne is the Executive Director of the WE Graham Community Services Society and has spent many years helping people. From helping people apply for assistance, filling in forms and paperwork, and running a food bank Joanne has spent many years assisting her community.
“All of these recipients, through their many years of selfless volunteerism, have made our communities and region a better place to live”, said Conroy. “I congratulate them all.”
