A Salmo woman waiting for her third liver transplant got a little help from her friends Saturday.

An event at Nelson’s Adventure Hotel raised just under $1,500 for Shelby Gielen, who suffers from the rejection of her previous translplant.

The money will contribute to Gielen’s ongoing medical and travel expenses as well as housing near Vancouver General Hospital.

“My team and I are working very hard to squeeze as much life as we can out of this amazing little liver that was donated to me almost 12 years ago,” said Gielen.

“It’s always very hard when I lose one. We know this third transplant is going to be a big challenge. I know my body’s getting sicker, but my spirit is always ready for a challenge when the time comes. Anyone who knows me, knows this,” she added.

“I want to thank those from the incredible communities of Nelson, Salmo, and Castlegar, and any I missed, who came out to support this cause. It was amazing seeing all of your beautiful faces.”

Those interested in signing up for organ donation can register on B.C. Transplant’s website. Donations to Gielen can be made online here.
