Kootenay-Columbia School District 20 (SD20) is inviting the public to an information session and discussion regarding the future of the Russian Language and Culture programs (RLC) at Twin Rivers Elementary School.
The program has seen dwindling numbers in recent years, a stark contrast to 20 years ago when parents would camp out overnight before registration opened to try to secure their child a spot in the program. SD20 says closing the program is being considered.
The program did not run during the 2023/2024 school year due to lack of enrolment. But in the current school year, 54 children are enroled in the program throughout grades K-4.
The RLC program follows the B.C. curriculum in English, plus integrated daily Russian language exposure through routines, themes, and occasions.
SD20 says it is an opportunity for students to become familiar with reading and writing in Russian as well as speaking using common words and expressions.
It also offerings a connection to the local Doukhobor cultural history and community through performing arts and field trips.
RLC is open to any student in the district.
The session will be held Dec. 2 at 5:30 p.m. in the Twin Rivers Elementary library.
