Stanley Humphries Secondary School is proud to announce its new composting program. Students now have easy access to compost bins located in all four major hallways next to the garbage cans.

Composting, along with other environmentally friendly initiatives such as recycling, has been in demand among students since last year. We would like to thank Caitlin Kellendonk and the Environmental Club for spearheading the program and educating students on how to properly compost!

Door Decorating

Competition was fierce in the annual door decorating contest. Staff and students participated by decorating the door of their B block class with an original Christmas scene. The doors were judged on Dec. 19, with the prize being Timbits and hot chocolate for the winning class.

Doors were judged by the Leadership class based on neatness, effort, creativity, originality, and incorporation of the Christmas theme. Congratulations to this year’s winners, Mrs. Brunton’s class! Thank you to all the students and staff for spreading the Christmas spirit by participating, and to the Leadership class for organizing our fun yearly tradition.

Grads sort and

deliver poinsettias

Christmas spirit started early this year with the grads’ annual poinsettia fundraiser. In November, grads brought order forms to local businesses as well as neighbours, family and friends to ask them to support the SHSS Class of 2020. Orders were delivered Dec. 5 after a smooth and successful sort. Thank you to those who bought poinsettias and supported this year’s safe grad.

Annual Winter

Formal

Students had a blast at the annual Winter Formal dance. Many students enjoyed using the photobooth to take fun, memorable pictures with friends and share photos of their formalwear on social media. Everyone danced in the activity room, making for a fun night of constant activity. We would like to thank the Leadership class for organizing the dance.

SHSS Spirit Week and Christmas

assembly

Even with winter break approaching, school spirit at SHSS remained strong. The SHSS Student Council hosted a spirit week to celebrate the last week of school before the break. Students were encouraged to dress up in the theme of the day, with daily activities organized for those participating in Spirit Week. Monday was School Spirit Day, where students wore SHSS merchandise and the school’s colours, yellow and blue.

That was followed by Jersey Day on Tuesday, Meme Day on Wednesday, Tacky Festive Day on Thursday, and Pajama Day on Friday. The week of festivities culminated in a Christmas-themed assembly on Friday, with various games, caroling, a video from the Environmental Club, and a student interview segment. We hope that students and staff had an exciting final week, and that they enjoyed their winter break.

Student Council makes breakfast for teachers

On Dec. 16, student council members woke up bright and early to cook breakfast as a token of appreciation for the staff of SHSS. The staff bake french toast for the students annually on the day before winter break; student council decided to return the favour this year. Students cooked up pancakes and bacon, and coffee was provided by McDonald’s Castlegar. Thank you to our staff for always being awesome, and to the student council members for going out of their way to acknowledge that!
