Remembrance Day
Every year on Nov. 11, Canadians reflect, honour, and remember those who have served, and continue to serve Canada. The bravery and sacrifice of these individuals directly touch the lives of many people at SHSS.
The staff and students at Stanley Humphries proudly dedicate a portion of their day to remember through poppies, silence, and ceremonies. Every year, a candle-lighting ceremony takes place and a bugle call is played by the SHSS band. This year, similar to the last, the traditional Remembrance Day assembly was held virtually at 11 a.m. For students, this day led into a long weekend, providing them with the opportunity to truly reflect on the importance of this day.
Movember
For the past few years, teachers and students alike at Stanley Humphries have been engaging in Movember to influence positive change on a subject that is rarely seen in the media. Movember is a worldwide movement that raises awareness about men’s health. During the month of November, people of all genders, ages, and colours are encouraged to fundraise and participate in a movement that changes the view on the global men’s health crisis. Many individuals at Stanley Humphries chose to grow out their mustaches, leg hair, and arm hair in support of men struggling with mental health, cancer, and more. Do you know anyone who participated in Movember? Don’t forget to mark this powerful event in your calendar for next year.
Fall sports
As the month of November comes to a close, so do the glorious fall sports at SHSS. Volleyball, soccer, mountain biking, rugby, and field hockey are well-loved sports at this lively high school. These teams practiced, played games, and competed in tournaments wholeheartedly. Teams took to places such as Trail, Kimberly, and Osoyoos to compete. As the first official competitive sports season since COVID-19 restrictions came about in early 2020, it was an exhilarating experience SH will never forget. For numerous seniors, it was their last experience playing in high school sports. Many students are looking forward to the basketball season kicking off in December.
Formal day
Suits and ties, dresses and heels, galore! The student council is breaking away from the regular, and put together a themed spirit day. Everyone wore their favourite formal clothes to school on Friday, Nov 26. In the past, the student council organized spirit weeks before vacations such as Christmas break and spring break. To promote more unity and bring about fun in an ordinary week, the student council is incorporating surprise spirit days every few weeks. These events receive an outstanding response and add a sense of community to the school.
