The Tarrys Fire Department is doing a Christmas charity drive on Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the subdivisions of Thrums, Tarrys, Glade, Shoreacres, and Voykins. Fire Department members will be going door to door to collect toys, books, and non-perishable food items.

"We've been doing this for a number of years. This is the first time we've gone door to door," said Brittani Nelson. "We'll have the fire trucks out."

The food and toys collected will be given to Castlegar's Community Harvest food bank and the Royal Canadian Legion food bank.

People who won't be home Saturday can leave their items on their doorstep, clearly marked "for charity".

"A lot of people aren't able to have a Christmas in the Kootenays," said Nelson. "We want to put our best foot forward to let other people experience the Christmas spirit."
