The Hill

An older building survives among newer mansions at the base of a hill in Slovenia where local historian Walter Volovsek was raised. As dawn was breaking on a May 1945 morning, German captives were marched across this hay meadow to the place of their execution. Neighbours remember their cries for help, but no one could intervene. Their grave in the woods was gone by Volovsek’s last visit in 2006, having been displaced by the new subdivision at the base of the hill. Part of an ongoing series.
