The annual deadline for registering pets in the City of Castlegar has just passed.
Even if you missed Jan. 31 the deadline, you should still go ahead and get your furry friends licensed in order to avoid fees down the road.
Dogs over the age of 12 months and cats over the age of three months must be licensed.
Registering your pets has several benefits including improving the chances that lost pets can be reunited with their owners.
There is no fee to license cats. But dog fees vary based on the type of dog and its spay/neuter status.
Spayed or neutered dogs are just $25, that price goes up to $75 if they have not been spayed or neutered.
Dogs that have been deemed to be aggressive ($100), vicious ($200) or dangerous ($500) cost considerably more.
There is no charge to register guide dogs, RCMP or service dogs.
The city uses the license fees to help fund its contract with the SPCA to provide shelter and care for rescued animals. Fees also pay for pet adoption programs, public education, and for the database that allows pets to be reunited with their owners.
The SPCA also performs licence spot checks, patrols, dead animal disposal and impound services for the city.
Last year, 317 pets were registered with the city.
