On Friday, June 22, Food 4 All Castlegar, which oversees Castlegardens, will join with Twin Rivers Elementary School to celebrate their partnership and recent achievements. Twin Rivers students will host tours of the gardens and showcase their talents throughout the afternoon. An evening of live music, watermelon and yoga will round out the day. Community members are invited to join in the festivities at any point in the day.

“We love the garden. Our class goes there all the time to learn and play,” said a kindergarten student from Castlegar Primary, referring to the community garden just down the hill from the school. At 10 a.m. students will dedicate the new deck built by a volunteer crew from Kalesnikoff’s Lumber.

Keri Russell and her Grade 6 class will cut the ceremonial ribbon on the new composter at 1:15 pm. “This partnership provides valuable learning and community service experiences for students,” Russell shared. “We encourage the community to join us in the official unveiling and stay for a tour by students.” Students will lead tours from 1:30 p.m. until 2 p.m.

“The community garden has come a long way in the last two years” says Nicole Hergert, Chair of the Food 4 All Castlegar Board, “We simply would not exist without our partnerships with local schools, or the support of the larger community. The board hopes that Castlegarians will use this opportunity to come out and see what we’ve become and where we’re going. We also want to show how much work is still to do, and maybe we’ll convince a few new volunteers or members to join.”

Friday’s evening program is open to all. At 5 p.m., picnickers are invited to bring their blankets, chairs, and dinner to eat in the garden. Food 4 All Castlegar will provide watermelon and ice cream. Local musician Chickadee will take the stage at 6:30 pm and twilight yoga (bring-your-own-mat) will start at 8 p.m. Admission for the evening is by donation, with all proceeds supporting the on-going efforts at Castlegardens.
