Vigil for Peace coming to Brilliant Cultural Centre next week

International Day of Peace event will be held in Castlegar Sept. 21

Submitted by Kootenay Region Branch of the United Nations Association

Castlegar area residents are invited to a vigil for peace on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Brilliant Cultural Centre.

The event coincides with the International Day of Peace. it is being organized by the Kootenay Region Branch of the United Nations Association in Canada.

Event organizer J.J. Verigin says the designation by the United Nations Organization is intended to focus the attention of the world’s people and their governments on the importance of peace to any aspect of human development.

“The devastating effects of warfare on humanity and our planet are well known, yet conflict continues unabated on almost every continent,” says Verigin. “What does this say about us and what does it mean for our future?”

Participants will have the opportunity to show solidarity with people suffering from conflict, hear stories from witnesses, find out how we can be helpful to those suffering from war or trying to escape from it, and ultimately why this scourge continues to persist.
